By the end of World War II three major branches of Soviet intelligence operating in America – the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Red Army General Staff (GRU), Intelligence Directorate of Red Navy (RU VMF) and First Directorate of the People’s Commissariat of State Security (PU NKGB) – established an unbelievably huge spy network covering the United State and penetrating the White House, virtually all major federal agencies, and American military industry including top secret Manhattan Project. This is the story why, how and by whom this huge army of spies consisting of several hundred agents and at least a hundred of their Soviet controllers has been ruined and dwarfed within some five years. The article is based on a host of original intelligence documents found by the author in several Russian and American archives, published documents relating to Soviet American and British intelligence services activities in the United States, memoirs of numerous Soviet intelligence and conterintelligence officers and works by Russian, American, British and French historians.
