«Новые» еврейские иммигранты и американское общество на рубеже XIX–XX веков
Аннотация
The Jews from Eastern Europe and, first of all, from Russia were one of the biggest ethnic group, after the Italians and the Slavs, within a stream of «new» immigrants, which directed to the United States late in the 19-th century. A study of the attitude of the American society towards Jewish immigrants gives an opportunity to understand its perception of the «new» immigration as a whole, the way of national identification through opposition «natives» and «strangers», because opponents and advocates of «new» immigrants appealed to this example in search of their arguments. This article is focused on research of Jewish immigration from Russia, as the Russian Jews were the most numerous (71,6%) within the Jewish migration «wave». Besides of it, Jewish Emigration, was the major component of the emigration movement from the Russian Empire, that is why these settlers exerted real influence upon American public opinion towards «another» country. Jewish immigration took an active part in the creation of a negative image of Russia in American consciousness, resulting in the origin of long-live “stereotypes”, and caused an aggravation of «Jewish question» in Russian-American relationship.
