W.G. Simms was an important American literary figure during the antebellum period. However, as Simms’ politics and ideology grew more nationalistic and more sectional, his writings moved to advocate ideas of separation of the South and creation independent southern Confederacy. The article describes political career and views of this leading propagandist of the South before the Civil War.
