The article is focused upon the American variety of the university novel and considers the roots and main reasons for enormous popularity of this genre at the turn of the 21st century. The American university novel is viewed as a phenomenon representative both of intellectual and mass culture. Genre clichés of the modern university novel are analyzed in the context of the modern sociocultural situation. The latest accomplishments of the university prose challenge mass stereotypes and combine intellectual tenor with deep moral reflection, the university campus presenting a paradigmatic model for the most essential moral and cognitive problems of the modern postindustrial society.
