Аннотация

The author analyzes the attitude of one of the oldest and most famous English humorous weekly periodical “Punch, or the London Charivari” towards Americans (so called Yankees), some peculiarities of their national character and the United States (model republic) as well in 1840s–1850s. The analysis of different types of materials such as cartoons, pamphlets, parodies, verses, etc. helps the better understanding of “Punch”’s role not only in reflecting the deep-rooted English stereotypes concerning the USA but also its efforts to construct and disseminate new images and perceptions of Americans.
