The article shows why the White House and the Department of State decided to avoid a chance of any personal meeting between the author of GULAG ARCHIPELAG and the President of the United States as well as moral and political consequences of the decision. The analysis is based on unpublished documents of Alexander Solzhenitsyn Folder and some other papers of Gerald R. Ford Library, and memoirs by President Ford and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
