James Shields was a shipbuilder and seafarer «by the calling of his soul». The life of this outstanding person has always interested the researches. He was the maker of the frigate Feniks, the author of maps and drawings of early colonial possessions and settlements of the Russian Empire in Alaska. New documents about the life of James Shields illuminate the events and details of colonial life in Northwest America at the end of the eighteenth century.
