James Russell Lowell – was a many-sided man, one of the famous figures of his time. American poet, critic, essayist, satirist, journalist, educator, scholar and diplomat, he carried a great contribution to the cause of abolition of slavery in the United States. He exerted essential influence on formation of American public opinion before the Civil War. The article is devoted to the political views of Lowell and his place in the antislavery movement.
